Best embroidery machine for beginners: choose by hoop, not hype

A bigger design area matters more than a long list of built-in designs. Compare four beginner-friendly Brother machines by what you actually want to stitch.

Hoopwise Editorial · Published October 7, 2026 · Source-based guide, not hands-on testing

Start with your largest project

Write down the width and height of three projects you want to make. A small chest monogram may fit a 100 × 100 mm field; a larger tote motif may need 130 × 180 mm. Measure the stitched design, not the fabric or the outside of the hoop. Use our hoop checker before choosing a machine.

The four-machine shortlist

The PE545 is embroidery-only, with a 4 × 4 inch field (100 × 100 mm), 135 designs and a stated 400 stitches per minute. The SE700 combines sewing and embroidery with a 4 × 4 inch field and 135 designs. The PE900 is embroidery-only with a 5 × 7 inch field (130 × 180 mm), 193 designs and a stated 650 stitches per minute. The SE2000 adds sewing to the 5 × 7 inch field, with 193 embroidery designs and 241 sewing stitches.

Our decision rule

Already have a sewing machine and need larger designs? Start your comparison with the PE900. Need one machine for sewing and embroidery? Compare the SE2000. If small designs are enough, compare the PE545 and SE700 instead. This is a specification-based shortlist, not a hands-on test or a claim that one machine is best for everyone.

Budget for more than the machine

Include stabilizer, embroidery thread, bobbin supplies, test fabric and any software or designs you buy. Check the exact seller, warranty, included hoops and return terms. Avoid choosing on an advertised discount alone.
