Buying guide
4 × 4 vs 5 × 7 embroidery hoop: what fits?
Understand the usable embroidery field before buying a machine, hoop or design.
Use millimeters for the real limit
Marketing names round the field to inches. Brother describes the 4 × 4 class as 100 × 100 mm and the 5 × 7 class as 130 × 180 mm. A nominal 4 inch design is 101.6 mm and can exceed a 100 mm field. Use the exact stitched dimensions in millimeters.
Rotation may help
A 170 × 120 mm rectangle can fit a 130 × 180 mm field after a 90-degree rotation. A 140 × 190 mm rectangle cannot. Rotation only addresses geometry; stitch count, format, hoop recognition and design version still need checking.
A larger accessory hoop is not an upgrade
A hoop that physically attaches does not necessarily expand the machine field. Multi-position hoops can support separately positioned sections, but a single unsplit design remains subject to the machine limit. Do not buy an oversized accessory expecting it to unlock larger single designs.
Before you buy a design
Check stitched width, height, stitch count, compatible format and whether the download contains multiple sizes. Choose the correct size file before transfer. Resizing a stitch file can change density, so use suitable embroidery software and test the result.
