How long does machine embroidery take? A practical formula

Estimate stitch time, then add the setup and color changes that machine speed leaves out.

Hoopwise Editorial · Published October 7, 2026 · Source-based guide, not hands-on testing

The basic calculation

Stitching minutes = stitch count ÷ effective stitches per minute. A 12,000-stitch design at an effective 480 stitches per minute takes about 25 minutes of stitching. Four one-minute thread changes bring that to 29 minutes, before setup.

Maximum speed is not typical speed

A stated maximum is a ceiling, not a prediction. Short stitches, jumps, trims, slow sections and interruptions affect actual output. Our calculator lets you choose an efficiency factor. The default is a planning assumption, not a measured performance claim.

Add setup separately

Hooping, threading, transferring a design, checking placement and finishing are real work. Time a sample from start to finish. For repeated orders, keep notes on both machine time and hands-on time so you do not quote solely from stitch count.

Use a range for a promise

Run a faster and a slower scenario. A deadline should allow for a thread break, bobbin change and a test stitch. The calculator estimates time; it does not guarantee when your machine will finish.
